What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth that makes a Muslim eligible to pay Zakat. It is measured using the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Zakat becomes obligatory if one’s total assets exceed this amount and are held for one lunar year. This principle ensures fairness and compassion — so that only those who are financially capable are required to give, while protecting those struggling to meet their daily needs.

How is Zakat Calculated?

Zakat is generally calculated as 2.5% of one’s surplus wealth, including savings, investments, and assets after deducting debts and essential expenses. To calculate:
Add up all your total assets.
Subtract liabilities and debts.
Ensure the remaining amount exceeds the Nisab threshold.

Who is Eligible to Pay Zakat?

Any Muslim whose wealth remains above the Nisab level for a full lunar year is obligated to pay Zakat. This includes individuals with sufficient savings, gold, investments, or assets. Paying Zakat is not only a religious obligation but also a privilege — one that purifies wealth, strengthens empathy, and helps build a more just and caring society.
